Let's get as many blocks done and win the Warm Up America challenge! ~ ChaninSouth Mountain Guildshttp://www.blogger.com/profile/03060187771801858924noreply@blogger.com3tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-7022169756456567194.post-11305378846315417982017-05-19T20:19:00.000-04:002017-05-19T20:19:15.434-04:00Warm Up America CGOA Challenge June 30, 2017After much research on where and when to send/drop off the rectangles, I have discovered that we can either send the rectangles to the main office of Warm Up America. However, they recommend that the groups put the afghans together themselves and donate locally. At our next meeting, Tuesday, May 30, before start working on Tunisian bobbles and lace, we can decide how we want to proceed. I am still collecting rectangles and have even put a call out on my personal Facebook page to any and all crocheters (and knitters) that if they want to donate their rectangles to us or their time to put them together, I am listening. There is actually a lot more to the Warm Up America than just the afghans, which I will share with you all at the meeting as well. As of now we have about 40 rectangle but we still have about 6 weeks until the end of the challenge. Get those crochet hooks moving and lets see how many we can get done before the end of the challenge. So for now we are collecting rectangles and will happily take donations from any and everyone who wants to participate!!!

Enjoy all and see you soon.
We practiced our knit and purl stitches and worked on projects! This was only our second meeting, but we had a good turnout and even had a new person show up to the meeting. We love meeting new people and every one is always welcomed to join us. My grand-kids even made an appearance.

National Night Out is August 1 this year and the knitters agreed that we needed to participate again this year. Last year, the crochet group sat alone, but this year, we will represent knitting and crochet fiber arts!!! We had a great time last year, so I'm hoping for the same this year!!!

Our next meeting is Tuesday, May 30th at Wegman's on Rt. 26 from 6 -8 pm. We will be learning Tunisian bobbles and lace. We are also continuing with out Warm Up America block project! Knit and crochet blocks are welcomed. As always, bring completed projects you want to show to the rest of the group - we love seeing them!!!
We continued learning more Tunisian stitches by working the Warm Up America sections to practice. We have some new members, and of course, old timers that have helped to grow this group. However, we are always looking for more people who enjoy crocheting and want to give back to the community. Come join us at our next meeting on Tuesday, May 9th! This is our casual meeting where we work on our current projects or continue to make sections for the Warm Up America project. Remember to bring any current or completed projects to show to us! Joining the South Mountain Crochet Guild is free, so come on out and have some fun.South Mountain Guildshttp://www.blogger.com/profile/03060187771801858924noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-7022169756456567194.post-55542112140133035142017-04-26T20:32:00.001-04:002017-04-26T20:32:47.867-04:00South Mountain Knitting GuildSouth Mountain Knitting Guild became official on Tuesday, April 18, 2017 after a long hiatus. We had 5 people attend our first meeting, but would love to see more. If you want to learn to knit or are a Master Knitter, come join us on the third Tuesday of each month at Wegmans on Route 26 (Clemsons Corner) from 6pm to 8pm in the main dining room by the TV. We are working on a great charity project (Warm Up America!) and are going to be learning basic stitches for some of our newer knitters. Come join the fun! There is no fee to show up, knit, and enjoy the evening.South Mountain Guildshttp://www.blogger.com/profile/03060187771801858924noreply@blogger.com1tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-7022169756456567194.post-297590705247704212016-08-03T08:43:00.001-04:002017-04-26T20:27:30.528-04:00National Night Out!We had a table at National Night Out in Carroll Park last night. There was a lot of interest in people who wanted to learn how to crochet, or who already crocheted and wanted to learn more.

We welcome all new members!
We have three hat drive meetings, August 25, September 29, and October 27, from 6 to 8 p.m. at Wegmans.

Even if you don't feel like making hats, you can simply sit and work on a project of your choice.

As of our August 25 meeting, we have 35 hats.
This year, we're going to learn (or practice) a different stitch every month. We'll have both a hat pattern and an afghan square pattern to try, so you can have a bunch of hats or an afghan done this year (or both, if you like).

For the January 27, 2015 meeting, bring worsted weight yarn and a G or H hook. We'll be working on a set of similar stitches: the puff stitch (also known as the bobble stitch), the popcorn stitch, and the berry stitch. These stitches generally show up better with a solid color yarn than with a variegated yarn.

Hope to see you at the meeting!

Wow I am so amazed at the generosity of people's time and talents!! I mean, it's one thing to be willing to run to the store and buy something for charity and take the time to take to a center, but just imagine the extra effort when you have to HAND MAKE the item as well. Giving of your time and resources is such an amazing gift!

We had another 169 hats turned in between our guild members and members of the community who donated. We even received 4 hats mailed to us from a lady in Waldorf MD. How cool is that??

Thank you again to everyone who is helping us with our hat drive this year!! I can't wait to see how many hats come in this month!
Twelve ladies came out to make an attempt at the Crocodile Stitch. We struggled for a while but eventually everyone got the hang of it. Not everyone loved it :) But we all had fun working our way through it. Next month we are going to tackle Tunisian Simple Stitch and in June we kick off the 2013 SMC Hat Drive! Oh BOY!!!
We had 12 folks at last nights
meeting! That is awesome! We tried a new technique last night. It was
learning how to do a cable in crochet. Now this was more challenging
than some of our previous projects but I am so happy to hear that you
all gave it a try! If you weren't able to attend but would like a copy
of the pattern, email me at smcrocheters@yahoo.com and I will send it to
you.

I wanted to share this photo from February's
meeting. This is one of the completed fingerless gloves sets from our
January project. This was the difficult level pattern and I think Tish
did a fabulous job with them! Just love the colors she chose, don't
you?
On
a personal note, I wanted to say thank you to everyone who thought of
me yesterday. The surprise birthday party for me was wonderful!! I was so touched.
Thank you so much! Here's a pic of the beautiful cake.

We had a great start to the new year with last nights meeting. We tried our first mystery CAL (crochet-a-long). Two patterns were available, one with an Easy level, and one Intermediate. I have to say that I think everyone responded really well to giving the patterns a try. Here's a few pics from last nights meeting:
We also discussed our plans for the coming year. A great suggestion was that for each meeting we do a project that teaches a new technique or stitch. So for each meeting I will send out a supply list and technique we will work on during the meeting. Of course, the group projects are always optional but it should be a lot of fun.

Also, we are going to be doing another hat drive as our charity event for this year. We will be starting it early than last by holding it over the summer. Most likely we will kick it off at our May meeting but I haven't finalized anything yet.

Thanks for coming out everyone!!!! For those of you who might like the Mystery CAL patterns, email me at smcrocheters@yahoo.com and I will be happy to send you copies! See you all in February!!South Mountain Guildshttp://www.blogger.com/profile/03060187771801858924noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-7022169756456567194.post-85573681280309463992012-12-17T16:01:00.000-05:002012-12-17T16:24:33.431-05:00Just something Neat!!So how cool is this?? So I was thinking of another, easier way to keep you guys informed and up-to-date and I decided to start a South Mountain Crocheters Facebook page. I figure this would be an easier way to share projects and updates. Feel free to post messages and share pictures of your projects. This will be a great place to post questions and information on events. If you have a facebook id look us up. Just type South Mountain Crocheters in the search field and we should pop right up! I have placed some photos and a couple of updates on there. I hope you enjoy!
I have made the rounds at some of our drop off locations. We have another 52 Hats!

Also I heard from Two Rivers Yarns today and she said that the
Brunswick Senior Center has been making hats for us and estimate they
have close to 100 hats to donate. She doesn't have them yet but as soon
as they drop them off I will go get them and let you know what we got.
We are so unbelievably close!! We are at 390 right now! If the
Brunswick group has 100 hats we will be within 10 of our goal.

At our October meeting I am going to bring some thank you cards. I will have them available for everyone to sign and I will be sending a group picture with each card to the places that helped us collect hats and also made hats for us.
We kicked off our first charity event. The "2012 Hat Drive" to benefit Halos of Hope. We have set a goal of 500 hats to donate to Halos of Hope. If you are curious to know a little more about the organization and their goals you can check out the website here: Halos of Hope.

As an added incentive, for those who come to the guild meetings in Aug/Sept and bring finished hats, you will receive a raffle ticket. In Sept, at our 2 year anniversary meeting I will do a drawing and the winner will receive a really nice basket with crochet stuff and all kinds of other goodies. So get to crocheting those hats, the more you finish the more tickets you get and the better chance you have to win!

I have also placed drop off boxes at four businesses who have been gracious enough to let us. This way we can encourage other members in the community to make hats and contribute. These are the Frederick Senior Center and:
