Facebook Page

Hello everyone!
So I was thinking of another, easier way to keep you guys informed and up-to-date and I decided to start a South Mountain Crocheters Facebook page.  I figure this would be an easier way to share projects and updates.  Feel free to post messages and share pictures of your projects.  This will be a great place to post questions and information on events.  If you have a facebook id look us up.  Just type South Mountain Crocheters in the search field and we should pop right up!  I have placed some photos and a couple of updates on there.  I hope you enjoy!

YOU DID IT SMC!!!!

I am thrilled to report that at Tuesday night's meeting our grand total for our hat drive was . . . . . . wait for it . . . .  drum roll please . . . . .  . 700 HATS!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

You are all amazing!!!  I want to send out a special thank you to Colonial Jewelers, Uno's, Two Rivers Yarns, the Frederick and the Brunswick Senior Centers, and our friends in Laurel MD that made hats for us.  And I want to say THANK YOU to all of you, the members of SMC.  You all made my crazy goal of 500 handmade hats a reality and blew me away with your generosity and willingness to go above and beyond.  Here are a few pictures from Tuesday and our new Goal Chart.

The hats I counted out Monday night before the meeting.  There are 559 hats here.

A close up of the pile of hats at Wegman's with the numbers climbing!

SOOO Close!!!!

Here's an update on our Hat Drive.  I have made the rounds at some of our drop off locations.  We have another 52 Hats!

Also I heard from Two Rivers Yarns today and she said that the Brunswick Senior Center has been making hats for us and estimate they have close to 100 hats to donate.  She doesn't have them yet but as soon as they drop them off I will go get them and let you know what we got.  We are so unbelievably close!! We are at 390 right now!  If the Brunswick group has 100 hats we will be within 10 of our goal.

At our October meeting I am going to bring some thank you cards.  I will have them available for everyone to sign and I will be sending a group picture with each card to the places that helped us collect hats and also made hats for us.

July Meeting

Thank you to everyone who came out for our July meeting!  We kicked off our first charity event.  The "2012 Hat Drive" to benefit Halos of Hope.  We have set a goal of 500 hats to donate to Halos of Hope.  If you are curious to know a little more about the organization and their goals you can check out the website here:  Halos of Hope.

As an added incentive, for those who come to the guild meetings in Aug/Sept and bring finished hats, you will receive a raffle ticket.  In Sept, at our 2 year anniversary meeting I will do a drawing and the winner will receive a really nice basket with crochet stuff and all kinds of other goodies.  So get to crocheting those hats, the more you finish the more tickets you get and the better chance you have to win!

I have also placed drop off boxes at four businesses who have been gracious enough to let us.  This way we can encourage other members in the community to make hats and contribute.  These are the Frederick Senior Center and:

I also have a dedicated page now on the website for folks to get more info. You can see it on the menu bar above.  I hope everyone has a great August and I can't wait to see all the fantastic hats!!

June Meeting

Tis that time again for the crocheters to come out to play :)

Thank you to everyone who took the reigns and made sure the meeting proceeded without a hitch.  The Square-a-Month Blanket is finished . . . . in theory :)  I know that many of you are still working on squares and some of you are still new and only have a few patterns.  Later this afternoon all of the square patterns will be listed on our website for you to work on at any time.  Tonights meeting will focus on how to turn all of those great squares into an afghan.  There are many different techniques and I will be passing out some good resources and we will have some demonstrations from members.  Feel free to continue to work on squares or bring projects you are working on.

HAT DRIVE!

We are going to begin passing out patterns for our hat drive next month.  I have not had too much luck with finding locations willing to let me put up a donation box so if you know some local business who may be willing to let us, let me know :)  I still have several places to check.  I am also going to bring some flyers to the next meeting if you know of any places you can post to encourage folks to donate hats.

Hope to see everyone tonight.  6-8pm as usual at the Wegmans!

See ya later, Kristina

March meeting and Blog makeover

Hello everyone!
Sorry to be late to adding this blog entry.  First I want to say thank you so much to all of the new folks who showed up for our March meeting.  We were out-numbered by new comers.  An impromptu class on a granny square broke out during the meeting and we had an absolute ball.  I hope we have many returning for April's meeting (which will be tomorrow by the way).

A special thank you to Sandy Gold who allowed me to borrow her completed afghan to photograph.  I used one of my pictures to create the new header for our blog.  I think it gives us a fresh new look and I love the colors of the blanket against the spring flowers.

Also special thank you to those who volunteered at our last meeting to help make hats.  This summer we will be hosting a hat drive and these volunteers are making samples of the hat patterns so you can see the finished products.

I am looking forward to seeing everyone for our April meeting!
Happy Crocheting.

SMC February Meeting

Hello there everyone!

Thank you so much to everyone who was able to join us for our February meeting.  We had a great turn out and a great time.  The Double-Framed Lace square seemed to be a pattern that everyone enjoyed working on.

I would like to send out a special thank you to Karen Gardner, Graham Cullen, and the Frederick News Post for coming to our February meeting to do a story on us.  I am pleased to say that the article was fantastic and mentioned a number of the members who were present.  I have also received numerous calls from folks in Frederick interested in coming to our meetings because of the article.  I say, the more the merrier!  If you didn't get a chance to see it in the paper (the March 8th edition of the Frederick News Post) here is a link to the article Hooked on Stitches online.

Spring is in the air!  I hope everyone is enjoying crocheting as the warmer weather begins to approach.  I encourage everyone to explore different techniques in crochet.  I have recently began playing around with tapestry crochet and bosnian crochet.  These are simple techniques using stitches and skills most crocheters already know.  I will be bringing samples of both styles to share and hope that if you see an interesting technique or style of crochet that you will share with the group.

See you all at the end of the month.  Our March meeting will be on the 27th.

See you all soon!
