South Mountain Crocheters - August Meeting

First, let me just say . . . WOW!
We had 16 members show up for this month's meeting.  It is wonderful to see so many people who are interested in crochet!  I have added the August square to the project page here on the website.  I hope everyone is enjoying working on this project together.
October marks our 1 year anniversary!!  It amazes me to see how we continue to grow with each meeting.  Please keep in mind that as the holiday season approaches we may adjust our meeting night for November and December.  Last year we didn't have one in December because it fell too close to Christmas.  Please look ahead at your Christmas and Thanksgiving schedules and let me know what would be a good evening for those meetings.
Thank you to everyone who donated yarn to the Alabama Crocheters!

See you all in September!!!

SMC New Meeting Location / June Meeting

NEW LOCATION!! NEW LOCATION!! NEW LOCATION!!
In January, AC Moore changed their room rate for us.  In that time many of you have made suggestions that we should relocate our meeting place.  I have been trying to find somewhere else willing to accommodate us and that individuals would feel comfortable coming too.  I recently spoke with the manager at Borders Bookstore on 355 and they have graciously agreed to let us meet at the bookstore at no charge.  We will be meeting in the coffee shop lounge area near the front of the store.  We will continue to meet on the last Tuesday of each month.  Although they do not provide a private room, there are a couple of local groups who meet at Borders Bookstore and find them very accommodating.  I think, for now, this solves our location issue.  So please remember, we will be meeting at Borders Bookstore until further notice.  And BONUS, it's right next to a craft store . .  . what's not to like about that, right?
AFGHAN PROJECT
Each meeting we will work on a new square at the end of the project, you will have a nice sampler afghan to display.  It will allow us to explore new stitches and help each other out.  For those of you who were unable to attend (like me), here is a link to the May Square.  Also, to give you a jump on June or if you will not be able to attend our June meeting, here is a link to the June Square.  I am going to start a page on our website to show each month's square and keep the links in one place so you can all have access as is convenient for you.  Be sure to bring your hook and yarn to work on the square during our meeting.
I look forward to seeing all of you on June 28th from 6-8 pm at Borders Bookstore CafĂ©, 5533 Urbana Pike, Frederick, MD.

South Mountain Crocheters March Meeting / Upcoming Event

The South Mountain Crocheters had a really great meeting for March and I wanted to say a special "Thank you" to Catherine for her great presentation. I don't know about you guys, but it did inspire me to investigate different projects that I could do with the plastic grocery bags. We discussed the possibilities for demonstrations for future meetings so if you have any ideas feel free to email me. We have some interest sparked for a group Fair Blanket submission. This would be coordinating everyone making a 9 X 9 inch square and then assembling it. The squares could be done in a stitch and pattern of your choice but we will want to coordinate the type of yarn and be sure that they come out to 9 X 9 for consistency.

I wanted to give you all a quick reminder that this month's meeting will be a joint meeting with the South Mountain Knitters Guild. It will be held on April 19th at 7pm at the Roy Rogers, 301 Ballenger Center Drive in Frederick. There is a link to Google Maps on our website for driving directions. We will be having a guest, Mary Penxa, owner of Wendy's Knit Shop in Brunswick, MD. A special thank you to Susan Berte from the SMK for coordinating and organizing this meeting!

Also, we discussed the possibility of working on an organized charity project. Sandy Gold found information on making chemo hats for veterans. I am providing the information she gave and if there is interest please feel free to begin making the hats and we can see how many we have at our May meeting and if we would like to make more at that time. Here is the information from Sandy:

This organization is trying to collect 5000 by Veterans Day. Here's the info on the project:
http://www.knotsoflove.org/whats-new/events/veterans%e2%80%99-4th-of-july-cap-drive/
One of the patterns on their website is for a single crochet hat but you can choose any pattern you want. They do require the hat be made from one of their required yarns but the list includes several that are available from local craft stores.
Here's the donation form and list of required yarns:

Again, if anyone has interest in doing a demonstration or has an idea for a demonstration they would like to see at our May meeting, please email me and I will do my best to coordinate the demonstration. I hope to see you all on April 19th and our May meeting will be held on May 31st at our usual meeting place, AC Moore in Frederick.

Happy Crocheting!!!

SMC January Meeting

I want to thank everyone who was able to come to our January meeting!! We had a great turnout and a really good time. Sandy did a wonderful job of demonstrating some of the techniques involved with using Tunisian Crochet. Many of the members present jumped right in and tried out this new technique.

We also discussed the recent changes in our meeting place situation. AC Moore has had to change the room rental fee for the classroom we use each month. After looking over other options I made the decision for us to continue to meet at AC Moore. If you are able to help with the additional cost (we went from paying $10 to $49.99) there will be a small box at the refreshment table. If you choose to put in a couple dollars that would be helpful but it is not a requirement by any means. I have decided that we are not going to venture into the realm of membership dues. I want anyone and everyone interested in crochet to feel free to come without the requirement of paying.

This month Catherine will be demonstrating a great way to recycle plastic grocery bags into crocheted rugs. If you would like to participate during the demonstration, Catherine has provided a short list of supplies you will need:
1. A sharp pair of scissors
2. Size Q Crochet hook
3. As many plastic bags as you would like to bring

I look forward to seeing everyone at this month's meeting which will be on February 22nd at 6pm so please mark your calendars!!
